Axis Tank

I made a project beginning to end! This feels like a moment to celebrate. I knew my sewing practice would change with a new baby in our lives, but I didn’t know exactly how it would all work out. For reference I started sewing when my middle child was one, so I had consistent naps and bedtimes to work on projects. Sewing with a newborn is a whole new adventure.

I’ve been struggling to navigate all these life changes and feeling out of touch with myself as an individual person. I don’t think I’m alone in this either. I've seen so many people express that they are just in a funk right now. Not having time for hobbies that nourish me has been tough.

At the same time it’s been nice to have a break from sewing. I’ve been using this time to process what I want my relationship with sewing to be and thinking about making space for other projects I've had on my mind as well. The only advice I have, and what’s working for me, is just doing little bits when I can. I normally prefer bigger chunks of time to get into a flow state with a project, but that’s just not possible. Instead, I am trying to enjoy the little moments of sewing, or any activity, when I have them.

But Back to the beginning, I made an Axis tank and I love it. This pattern goes up to a 50 inch bust. Sewing with knits and sewing wardrobe basics is always a good palette cleanser for me. I also knew I would really like this pattern and I don’t know why I didn’t make it sooner. This pattern is great for smaller cuts of fabric and I had some left over from another tank top I made. My current measurements are bust: 36, waist: 30, hips: 41 in inches. I made the size medium (8/10) without any modifications and I don’t think I’ll make any changes in the future. This fabric is a bamboo rib knit from Blackbird Fabrics. The fiber content is 89.5% rayon from bamboo and 10.5% spandex. It has really nice recovery which is perfect for this pattern and it was easy to sew with, which for me means it has enough weight to it that it doesn’t get over stretched on my machine and create wavy seams.

It felt great to complete this top and I’ve cut out some other projects that I look forward to working on and sharing with you here.
